Xi Omicron History
Xi Omicron, the 499th seat in the House of Alpha, was chartered on Friday, April 11th, 1980 at the University of Delaware. The chapter’s first Alumni Advisor was Kirby Kirksey, from the Gamma Theta Lambda Chapter, and the charter members were eight visionary and innovative young men known as the Immortals. The Immortals are; Tracey Emmett Brown, Bryant Kent Hall, Kevin Lee Hopkins, Darryl Jeffrey Poston, Orlando Rainey, Nathaniel Patrick Tompkins, Levi Theodore Thompson, and William Charles Watson III. The Immortals are also known by the alias, The Revelations. Soon after the chapter’s founding, the Immortals took their first steps in expansion with the initiation of their inaugural line, the Gents of Quality. The next 34 years would see almost 100 men become members of the world’s greatest Fraternity through the University of Delaware chapter.
The Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., and the Xi Omicron Chapter have a firm belief that organizations such as ours must make a concentrated effort to reinvest in the community in which we exist. Xi Omicron has demonstrated its commitment to the community in a variety of ways. The chapter has sponsored it’s own and participated in voter registration drives sponsored by groups like the Metropolitan Wilmington Urban League, and supported the National March of Dimes’ annual Walk America campaign. The Fraternity’s national program, "Go To High School, Go To College" has enabled the College Brothers to tout the benefits of higher education to high school students of color. These type of programs will help to close the academic achievement gap between minority students and their white counterparts. The Chapter also endorses the national Project Alpha program. Project Alpha, which is targeted at teenage males, encourages responsible sexual behavior along with discussions about teen pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases, offers HIV and AIDS education, and promotes abstinence as an option. Since it’s inception, the brothers of Xi Omicron have excelled academically and participated in many programs that have benefited the University of Delaware and the surrounding community.
Through these programs, Xi Omicron upholds the Alpha Phi Alpha Motto: "First of All, Servants of All, We Shall Transcend All." We will continue to be a servant to the community whether it is through a structured fraternity program, one sponsored by the University or through the actions of an individual Brother.
Throughout the years, the Brotherhood's influence on those it serves, and closeness within its ranks, has grown stronger and stronger. This chapter has always attracted quality men and has honed proven leaders. Whether it is in the community, running campus organizations, or breaking stages at Greek step-shows, the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity will always be a force at the University of Delaware, and beyond.
